The Long Lake Veterinary Clinic was established by Dr. Dan Hartnett in 1971. This small clinic was transformed from a Barber shop and convenience store nicknamed "The Mud Hole" into what it is today. Dr. Dan continues to own, run and work as a veterinarian in the practice today alongside his two daughters, both of which followed in his footsteps and became veterinarians as well.
Dr. Daniel C. Hartnett grew up primarily on the eastern side of St Paul. He did his pre-veterinary studies at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. He graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota. He founded the Long Lake Veterinary Clinic, L.L.C., in 1971 and has enjoyed full time practice since its establishment.
Dr. Hartnett has two qualified veterinary employees on staff: Dr. Cris Hartnett (daughter), Dr. Liz Hartnett (daughter). Additionally, he employs an office manager, MC Owen, and seven receptionists: Judi, Emma, Megan, Andrea, Lauryn, Kristen, and Jeannie. He cares for two of his own cats, one dog and too many to count other animals (client’s pets). In his spare time, he enjoys biking, canoeing, playing in various musical groups, theater, the outdoors, wildlife photography and travel.

Dr. Cris Hartnett grew up in the western suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine where she graduated with honors in 2014. Dr. Cris directed her studies in small animals (dogs and cats) and has a special interest in exotic pets (including rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, reptiles and birds). Her professional small animal interests include surgery, dentistry, cardiology, ophthalmology and internal medicine. She provides house call services for interested clients when time allows.
Dr. Cris received her Bachelor of Science from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she graduated cum laude. She majored in Ecology, Evolution, and Organism Biology and minored in Studio Art. Dr. Cris was president of the Zoological, Exotics, Avian and Wildlife Club, treasurer of the Shelter Medicine Club, and an active member of multiple other associations during veterinary school.
Dr. Cris has a rescued black polydactyl cat named Stanley and a Labrador Mix, Quinn, who is often seen at the office. She also has a Ball Python named Walnut. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her four daughters and husband, along with the rest of her family and friends. She loves doing yoga, running, hiking, camping, skiing, throwing pottery on the wheel, and doing various arts and crafts.
Dr. Liz Hartnett grew up in the western suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She received her Doctorate of Medicine (DVM) from Saint Matthew’s University on Grand Cayman Island. She completed her clinical year of veterinary school at the University of Minnesota in 2014. She has special interests in Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Alternative Medicine, and Nutrition.
Dr. Liz received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (emphasis in studio ceramic sculpture/oil painting/photography) and a minor in Environmental Science from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1998. For many years, Dr. Liz worked abroad (teaching/training/traveling) in several places around the world including England, Thailand, Turkey, China and the Cayman Islands. She holds a teaching certification in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) from Cambridge University. In 2005, she received a dual Master’s Degree in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture from Bastyr University in Washington State. She has completed extensive alternative medicine programs in both China (Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture) and Thailand (Thai massage). She practiced acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, and massage therapy for several years in the United States prior to enrolling in veterinary school. She is currently a diplomat in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and is licensed to practice in Minnesota and Washington State. She was also trained at the Brenneke School of Massage in Washington State and is a certified/licensed massage therapist.
Dr. Liz has had many pets throughout her life including dogs, cats, turtles, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, mice, snakes and iguanas. Her current pet family includes Kai, born on Grand Cayman Island, and her cat Firefly. Kai’s favorite activities include running around in the yard, sneaking table scraps, and bonding with her human siblings (Dr. Liz’s three children). Dr. Liz is an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association. Her veterinary professional interests include alternative medicine (Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, Nutrition/Diet therapy), rehabilitation, behavior, small ruminant medicine, and surgery. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family/friends, traveling, gardening, finding creative outlets, taking on home improvement projects and staying active.
M.C. grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, and moved to Minnesota in 1967. She has played an active role as the office manager of the Long Lake Veterinary Clinic since 1993. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Her previous nursing career involved specialties in Cardiology/Intensive Care. MC has a special interest in animal behavior and has completed extensive training (200+ hours) in small animal communication/behavior. She has the pleasure of taking care of Clifford with Dr. Hartnett.
Emma grew up in Long Lake, MN. She has a beautiful rescue dog named Jackson, a red heeler mix. She attended school at the University of Kansas and is now attending school to be a licensed veterinary technician. She has worked at our clinic since 2019.
Judi grew up right here in Minnetonka, MN. She lived in Louisiana for a time before settling back in where she was raised. She has worked at our clinic since 2016.
Megan J. grew up in central Iowa and attended Indian Hills Community College for her Associate's Degree of Science. She has a brown tabby cat named Lil Butt and a calico cat named Trash Can. She is now attending school to become a licensed veterinary technician. She has worked at our clinic since 2019.
Andrea is from Plymouth and has a beautiful family including her husband, Mike, and her two daughters Aubrey and Olivia. She has a cat named Amelia and a hamster named Penny. Andrea has been working at the Long Lake Veterinary Clinic since 2021.
Kristen grew up in central Kansas before moving to Minnesota as a teenager. She is enrolled in a pre-vet program at the University of Minnesota. She shares a home with her fiancé and their 2 cats, Archer and Lana, and their three dogs, Layla, Phoebe, and Kiba. Kristen has been working at our clinic since 2021.
Catarina grew up in Minnetonka, MN and moved to Mound, MN in 2016. She was enrolled in the XinXing Hopkins Chinese Immersion program and graduated from Hopkins High School in 2020. She began a career at Long Lake Veterinary Clinic in 2022. She is undecided about her career path but loves to work with animals. She has a dog named Layla, a cat named Bug, and a ball python named Romeo.
Madison grew up in Coon Rapids, and she currently resides in Plymouth. She graduated from Bethel University with a B.S. in Biology. She has an interest in conservation and ecological research. She has a dog named Nelson, and two cats named Ivy and Sage.
